Crazy or Calculated? Is the Pandemic the Best Time to Start a Business?

December 21, 2021

Starting a business is never easy. Though we are all tired of hearing “In these unprecedented times”, in reality, the odds are stacked against you right now. All entrepreneurs right now are facing the same question; is now the best time to be starting a business?

Where the pandemic has forced thousands of businesses to close, it has also encouraged so many people to begin their own businesses. How? You might be asking; well the answer is certainly not easy, but most definitely possible. Here are the most important steps (in our opinion) on how to start your business during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Determine your ‘WHY’

Probably a given, but this one is truly important when deciding whether or not to start a business. Starting a business is a lot of work. If you don’t have a reason to keep pushing through, you’re not going to be successful. The beginning steps of starting a business is continuous work, and sometimes you don’t reap the rewards for a while afterwards. Developing a ‘why’ for yourself determines purpose.

Determining your ‘why’ gives your potential audience a way to understand what your objectives are; why are you doing this?, why this thing of all different kinds of businesses you could do?, what is your reasoning behind this? Once you’ve locked down exactly what your ‘why’ is in your business, you now need to work out how exactly you are going to share your story. One of the biggest parts of a successful business, is an engaging brand story. You want to be able to give your audience something they can connect with on a deeper level. Once you have built that connection, you will have a much easier time generating engagement on your brand which will lead to more sales.

Fill a Market Need

No matter what is going on in the world, there will always be some type of market need. In the beginning of the Covid-19 Pandemic, that need was toilet paper (oh how times have changed), Now as we’re pushing through the worst of these problems, market needs are different.

Making sure that you know what has been recently successful, or what you predict will become successful in the near future is really important to ensure success within your business without having to wait an exceedingly long time to get there. Once you figure out your ‘why’, figuring out where your service fits into the market is an important next step.

Develop a Good Marketing Strategy

Your marketing strategy is where you determine your organizational plan to cater exactly to your customers needs. By strategizing that prior to launch, you can predetermine your likely outcome based on previous successes and failures. A thorough marketing strategy gives your business an edge against your competitors and helps you determine which products/services have the best profit making materials.

Your strategy is one of the key building blocks when starting a business. During this time you must understand exactly who your target is intending to be, how you are going to market your products/services, your pricing structures, and how exactly you are going to develop your brand in a way that encourages purchase from your target market. By effectively utilizing your market strategy you are not only organized and prepared, but you are also able to provide a clear and direct message to the desired target.

Manage Within Your Network

Another thing that most people don’t think about on the go, but as a business owner you already have a community of people following you personally. If you have your own personal social media accounts, you already have a starting point. By sharing your intentions with your current social media following, you are more likely to gain an initial following on your business and test out what is going to work or otherwise with an already supportive community.

Think Digital

All we ever hear in advertising are industry professionals talking about how ‘Print is dead’, but have we stopped to think about how alive digital is? Made especially clear with the pandemic, having a digital imprint will be the make or break of your business. Of course this means coming up with an effective marketing strategy to input into your organic and potentially paid content!

Digital however goes beyond social media. The one thing that has been taught throughout this pandemic is how possible it is to reach our customers without ever seeing their face. This could mean preparing your business for eCommerce, digital advertising, app development, online stores internally and through platforms, and really using technology to your advantage when it comes down to reaching your customers in a convenient-for-them way. Consumers have learned to expect convenience. You need to prepare for that. Some people will go back to in-store purchasing, and face-to-face contact, but convenience is a behaviour that has been trained for over a year and we can predict that it isn’t going anywhere.

Stay Within Your Means

Everyone knows how expensive it is to start a business, but a mistake that is made the most common; is when you start making money you spend it all immediately. Of course you have typical expenses, but going over the top with spending can get you into some real trouble. Making sure to stay within your means is crucial to your success in the beginning.

If that isn’t an option for you, there are a number of small-business loans available to get you started off. These loans can cover anything from initial expenses, to equipment, to labour fees for employees. There are a number of different options out there laid out to help small business owners thrive!

Stay up to Date with Trends

Predictions are one thing when starting a business, but the actual trends and changes in the industry are what you really need to look-out for. This is an industry that is notorious for rapid changes. Being able to pivot and adapt to new demands, changes, and alterations are crucial.

This could mean subscribing to channels that post about changes often, following changes through various social media platforms, or keeping up-to-date with other industry professionals; but either way, keeping yourself up to date is crucial! Of course not everything you have to do has to be “trendy”, do what makes the most sense for you and your business.

Staying ahead of the curve is an important thing when it comes down to standing out to any competition and is a definite thing to pay attention to no matter what stage your business is in. You won’t regret it!

Expect to Pivot

Similar to staying on top of the trends, in an industry that is forever changing, you need to be prepared to pivot at a moment’s notice. Having a plan is a good thing, but you can’t marry it. Oftentimes things change without warning and preparing for the unexpected is a somewhat annoying, but important part of running any kind of business.

Similar to that episode of ‘Friends’ with Ross and the couch, running a business is exactly like trying to pull a couch up a shallow staircase and just hoping for the best. You know there’s a way to get that couch up there, you just need to figure out the way that makes the most sense for both you and the couch. Running a business is the same thing. There will be seemingly impossible situations that you will have to navigate, but if you can figure it out; you will be successful.

Take A Chance

A solid marketing plan can take you far, but at the end of the day; you’re going to have to take a deep breath and dive in. There will never be the perfect time or moment, there will always be a bunch of roadblocks standing in your way - whether you’re starting a business during a pandemic or otherwise - you will always have doubt in at least a couple of elements.

At a certain point, it’s a leap of faith. You do the best you can possibly do to prepare yourself, have the best marketing plan possible, but then you have to take a chance! Taking a chance can be scary, you don’t know what’s going to happen, but that’s half of the fun in being an entrepreneur and running a successful business!

Stay Positive

Positive, positive, positive! Sometimes in a business staying optimistic is an increasingly challenging thing to do. You face constant challenges, fears, and difficulties as you learn to navigate effectively through your business. Optimism is key to stay in the right mindset to be able to get your job done to the best of your capabilities and avoid the burn-out that happens over time if you’re unsuccessful. There is a time and a place for everything to work out as it needs to, and for a while that might mean being patient. Things work out as they need to and staying positive is the best step towards moving in the right direction!

We are at a point in the economy that businesses are closing left and right. Where that is scary for the economy, it also is opening up so much opportunity for growth. Where this has been an exceedingly difficult time over the past year, we now have the opportunity to grow towards the shift in the industry. We know that many behaviours that have been learned the past year plus, will still be relevant after the pandemic is said and done. Some things aren’t ever going to go back to the ‘normal’ we considered normal before this, but that means that if you pay attention, you can be ahead of the curve now!

Start your business, work hard, stay positive, and eventually you will be successful. Right now is a daunting time to be starting a business, but it really never is the perfect time. Don’t put off for tomorrow what you can begin today. It’s never too early, or too late to start your business. Keep your head up, and keep moving forwards and you will figure it out! From those of us over here at Rebel Force Digital, good luck in your new venture and we would love to hear all about it!
